Kits for Our Kids

Kits for our kids initiative

In July of 2018, a grant was awarded equipping DD2 schools with 600 Bleeding Control Kits.  The kits contain a tourniquet, scissors, gloves, bleeding control patch, bandage, and a gauze with a clotting agent.  However, medical professionals across the nation are stressing that these kits should be in every classroom and school bus.  600 kits is a great accomplishment, but for DD2, this only fills roughly 24 classrooms per each of the 25 schools.  In addition to and in conjunction with the Bleeding Control Kits, DD2 began providing all staff employees in 2018 with “Stop the Bleed” training done by EMS professionals and the school nurses.  This training educated the staff on how to effectively use the Bleeding Control Kits.  With this in mind, we are striving to raise the funds to purchase the additional 1400 kits necessary to fill every classroom and school bus in DD2.  We would like every teacher to have these kits readily available in their classroom to ensure that they are adequately prepared to always take care of their kids if an emergency arises.  Please donate as you are able, and let’s get all of DD2’s classrooms and buses stocked with these life-saving Bleeding Control Kits.

The total number of Bleeding Control Kits needed for all DD2 schools is 2041.  To date, with the help of grants and fundraising, DD2 has acquired a total of 1027 kits!  We still need to fund the additional 1014 so please help as you are able!

Did you know:  If every student at a DD2 school donated roughly $3 each then we could completely fulfill the deficit of all remaining kits needed for each school and bus!

Why the Kits for Our Kids Initiative?

  • Each year, about 60,000 Americans die from hemorrhaging, or blood loss.

  • Bleeding to death can happen very quickly. If the hemorrhaging isn’t stopped, a person can bleed to death in just five minutes.  And if their injuries are severe, this timeline may be even shorter.

  • Statistics show that uncontrolled bleeding is responsible for 40 percent of deaths within the first 24 hours of an incident, and the ability to stop blood loss is crucial to saving the life of victims.

  • On average in the U.S., the length of time between a call for help and the arrival of emergency medical services is about 8 minutes - but that rose to 14 minutes in rural areas (where about 10 percent of patients waited nearly 30 minutes).

  • Active shooter incidents often last a few short minutes, so tending to victims within seconds can mean the difference between life and death. Normally, paramedics and fire departments wait in secure zones away from the scene until it is safe to enter and rescue victims.

  • The Bleeding Control Kits have all of the necessary supplies for the lay-person to use and save a life.

  • All school nurses and staff have received “Stop the Bleed” training using the supplies that come with the Bleeding Control Kits.

  • These kits aren’t just for the active shooter scenario, there are numerous incidents that happen on school grounds annually that require someone to “Stop the Bleed”.

  • Medical professionals recommended that each classroom and bus gets a kit, along with common areas such as the cafeteria and library.

These kits cost $75 direct from the manufacturer in Anderson, SC.
